The African Liberty Writing Fellowship 2021 is now accepting applications. The program aims to identify promising African writers who care about freedom and equip them with the skills they need to succeed in op-ed writing.
African Liberty began as a joint project of the Cato Institute and IMANI Africa in 2007, and was later renamed the Atlas Network. It’s a platform for promoting individual liberty, peace, and prosperity in Africa by encouraging civil discourse and debate on social, legal, economic, and global issues that affect Africans.

They work with Africa-focused think tanks and partner media outlets to identify and train young promising African freedom advocates in professional journalistic writing and to help them launch careers in journalism and policy. They create and promote original reporting, interviews, and commentary to increase substantive debate among Africans and between Africa and the rest of the world.
Accepted applicants will complete a 5-week mandatory online course after which all candidates will be evaluated. The top twenty candidates will be recommended for admission as writing fellows.
African Liberty Writing Fellowship Eligibility Criteria
- An applicant has to be enrolled in, or must have graduated from, an African institution of higher learning. Or, be an African pursuing higher education outside the continent.
- Applicant must be committed to the entire duration of the program.
