The Yasmin El-Rufai Foundation (YELF) is pleased to announce the commencement of the 2022 Hafsat Abdulwaheed Women Short Story Prize and is inviting submissions from female writers in northern Nigeria in keeping with her dedication to reawakening and nourishing children’s inherent creativity through the creation of relevant platforms and initiatives, as well as boosting young women’s literacy abilities through the provision of learning support in low-literate settings.

Eligibility Criteria| Hafsat Abdulwaheed Women Short Story Prize

The Hafsat Abdulwaheed Women Short Story Prize is open to the candidates who meet the requirements below:

  • The winners of the maiden edition of this prize are not eligible
  • Only unpublished works from northern Nigerian authors who are yet to publish a single original book by May 13 2022, will be considered.
  • Entrants must be at least 18 years old.
Benefit
  • The winner receives N100,000
  • Runner up receives N70,000
  • The second runner up receives N50,000
  • Longlisted entries will be published on the YELF website

The Hafsat Abdulwaheed Women Short Story Prize has no specified theme but entrants who wish to submit their entries must take note of the following:

  • Each entry must be written entirely in English.
  • The document must be typed in Microsoft Word format, 12-point Times New Roman font, and double-spaced.
  • The story should be no less than 2500 words and no more than 3500 words long.
  • Candidates must submit only original, previously unpublished works.
  • The Hafsat Abdulwaheed Women Short Story Prize has no entry fee.
  • All entrants must avoid submitting their stories elsewhere between the opening of the prize on May 13th, 2022, and the announcement of the longlist on 15th October 2022.
  • All entries must be e-mailed to [email protected] as an attachment with the Title as SUBMISSION FOR THE HAFSAT ABDULWAHEED WOMEN SHORT STORY PRIZE on or before 13th August 2022.
  • Printed copies can also be dropped off at Creativity Court, Ungwan Dosa Kaduna, No 21 Mallam Isa Hassan Road.
  • Two copies of each entry should be submitted, one with the author’s full name on it and the other without.
  • A separate (title) page should be included in the manuscript with the author’s name, school (if applicable), age, home address, e-mail address, phone number, state of origin, and manuscript word length.
  • Multiple entries will not be accepted.
