  • Applicants must be enrolled in one of the eligible universities.
  • The research proposal must be closely related to one of the themes:
    • AI/ML/NLP/data science: Data is often limited and biased in many practical applications. Understanding how we work in these environments and produce useful results has a big impact on a lot of practical issues and gives us a lot of insight into what it means to learn with data. From practical applications like NLP to understanding the fairness and generality of results and deepening our understanding of what is possible with the data available for a particular problem, we chevalier on the chevalier. We’re curious about how we can better work with data limitations.
    • Health: Machine learning and AI advancements provide us with an opportunity to address disparities in access to and delivery of high-quality healthcare for all people. We’re interested in learning about and exploring areas where technology can help close the gap, such as assisting healthcare practitioners in performing their roles more effectively, bridging the last mile to patients, and scaling the delivery and reach of high-quality healthcare.
    • Sustainability: Microsoft’s commitment to sustainability will be realized by leveraging cloud and artificial intelligence (AI) tools to transform the way we monitor, model, and, ultimately, help solve the world’s environmental problems. We would be delighted to receive your application if you are a PhD student enrolled in an African university studying artificial intelligence, machine learning, statistics, or a related field with a focus on solving problems related to sustainability.
    • Human-Computer Interaction: We are looking for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) fellows to investigate Usability and Design issues in the areas of Work, Health, Sustainability & Society. Interns in human-computer interaction (HCI) typically lead and conduct research studies (online or on the ground), usability studies, literature reviews, and design interventions.
  • Must be entering their third year or beyond of their PhD program sometime between August 2022 – July 2023.
  • Students must remain enrolled at the university at the start of the academic year 2023 in order to keep their scholarships.
