ADDO Research Fellowship 2022

The African Digital Democracy Observatory has announced the commencement of its 2022 ADDO Research Fellowship. ADDO is providing research funds and technical assistance to an evidence-based study of how malign actors use coordinated disinformation and propaganda or other influence and information operations to cause conflict across 21 African countries.

About the ADDO Research Fellowship

Grant applicants must disseminate their findings in easy-to-access formats. As a result, ADDO is particularly interested in research ideas that aim to produce:

  • Short reports (500w–1,000w) based on journalistic analysis.
  • Infographic explainers that break down complex problems for lay audiences.
  • Datasets containing actionable information, lexicons, or watchlists for scholars, media, or civil society organizations to utilize in their own study.
  • Presentations are made at conferences or to peer groups to showcase research.
Eligibility Criteria

The ADDO Research Fellowship includes a $5,000 to $10,000 grant for each project, as well as additional access to ADDO forensic analysts, data scientists, and open-source intelligence (OSINT) experts, as well as machine learning techniques for social listening or data/network analysis.

NOTE: Selected fellows will be asked to present their findings at ADDO seminars or international conferences.

Application Procedure

The application process has rolling deadlines, with proposals examined and shortlisted as they are received, with a final deadline of October 15, 2022.

The envisioned roadmap will be

  • Begin the research fellowship with technical assistance from ADDO’s forensic analysis and machine learning teams.
  • Present preliminary/iterative research insights/findings at ADDO seminars and other industry events.
  • Publish the final research report on a public platform and share the findings at appropriate public forums.

The ADDO Research Fellowship will accept applications in Arabic, English, or French. The findings of the study are published in any of the three languages, as well as in local indigenous African languages if appropriate.
