About the AERC PhD Fellowships


Established in 1988, the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC) is a non-governmental organization dedicated to enhancing economic policy research and education throughout Africa. The Consortium is driven by the understanding that sustained progress in sub-Saharan Africa is contingent upon the presence of well-trained, locally embedded professional economists.

AERC is steadfast in its commitment to bolstering capacity development in economic policy across Francophone and Anglophone African nations through its advocacy for policy research and graduate training initiatives.

The AERC PhD Fellowships are open to candidates from Francophone and Anglophone sub-Saharan African countries who have gained admission to any of the AERC Collaborative PhD Programme (CPP) in Economics degree-granting programs listed below:

Eligibility Criteria

The AERC PhD Fellowships are open to applicants who:

  • Have applied to and been accepted by any of the universities listed in the Collaborative PhD Programme (CPP).
  • Hold a minimum of a Second Class Honours (Upper Division) or its equivalent in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or a related field from an accredited university.
  • Possess a Master’s degree with both coursework and a thesis component in Economics, Agricultural Economics, or related disciplines from a recognized institution. The coursework should cover microeconomics, macroeconomics, quantitative methods, and econometrics.
  • Applicants with at least one relevant publication in a peer-reviewed journal will be given preference.

  • Demonstrated engagement in economic management, research, and/or training within the public sector will be considered an asset.
  • Female candidates and applicants from post-conflict and fragile states are strongly encouraged to apply.
Application Procedure

Interested applicants must submit their applications for admission directly to the respective universities (application procedure can be obtained from the respective university’s website). Upon receipt of an admission letter from a specific university, applicants shall upload the following documents onto the AERC scholarship portal.

  1. Application cover letter;
  2. Curriculum Vitae.
  3. Evidence of admission at any of the universities listed above; and
  4. Certified copies of transcripts and certificates.
