About the Richard And Susan Hayden Academy Fellowship
This fellowship is being established in collaboration with Richard and Susan Hayden. It enables mid-career professionals to spend ten months at Chatham House working on a personal project of their choice.
Fellows contribute to the Institute’s main mission by strengthening their leadership skills and expanding their professional network in the field of international affairs. The Richard And Susan Hayden Academy Fellowship will run for ten months, from October 2021 to July 2022.

The fellow will be based at Chatham House in London on a full-time basis. However, working hours will be flexible, and portions of the program may be conducted online in accordance with COVID-19-compliant working practices.
Program Structure
A fellow’s time will be split between three key areas:
- Completing a personal research project: the fellow will choose and design a personal project to undertake with the guidance of a Chatham House expert (approximately 50%).
- Contributing to the ongoing research activities: working with their host research team and other Chatham House teams as appropriate (approximately 20%).
- Leadership Program: it is a key part of all fellowships. It aims to develop fellows knowledge, network, self-awareness and to equip them with important skills on which they can draw in their future careers as leaders in their field (approximately 30%).
Eligibility Criteria
- Open to all nationalities.
- It is required that the applicant holds a completed BA degree or equivalent. A Master’s degree with an international focus is preferred.
- The fellowship is aimed at candidates at the mid-stage of their career and who come from academia, NGOs, business, government departments, civil society, or the media. They should possess knowledge of, and interest in, the policy challenges related to global governance.
- They do not impose age restrictions for applicants. However, Academy fellowships are aimed at individuals at the mid-stage of their careers.
- Fellows are expected to work full-time towards their fellowship and therefore it is not possible to undertake a fellowship at the same time as pursuing work or studies (such as for a Ph.D.).
Selection Criteria
- Leadership potential
- Aptitude to benefit from the broad and inclusive nature of the fellowship
- The relevance and clarity of the proposed research project, as demonstrated through the project proposal
- Relevant background experience, as demonstrated through the curriculum vitae
- Demonstrating the necessary English-language ability
- Motivation for undertaking the fellowship
- A post-fellowship plan which indicates how the candidate will apply their research, skills and knowledge in their region or field.

Benefit
At the Richard And Susan Hayden Academy Fellowship fellows are entitled to a monthly stipend of £2,365. A small amount is set aside for relocation, fieldwork, and possible publication fees. The stipend will cover the cost of living in London, including housing, utilities, food, and transportation.
